In this six-week fiction workshop, each participant will workshop a short story or novel excerpt of up to 5,000 words, with discussions focusing on elements of fiction such as story structure, character development, exposition, and dialogue. We'll zoom in on practical revision ideas that help participants to meet their individual writing goals, including submitting for publication. Depending on interest, we'll also engage in craft exercises such as close readings of published short fiction. We'll meet on Zoom from 7–9:30 each Tuesday night from April 14 through May 19. Come prepared to be thoughtful, kind, and open-minded about others' submissions!
This class is limited to 10 students and is designed for writers with workshop experience. Tuition includes a 30-minute meeting with the instructor.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Shannon Sanders is the author of the forthcoming The Great Wherever, which was named one of Publishers Weekly's 10 Most Anticipated Literary Fiction titles for Spring/Summer 2026, and a Most Anticipated Book of 2026 by Literary Hub, BookPage, and Debutiful; and the linked short story collection Company, which won the 2024 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes’ Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, was named a best book of 2023 by Publishers Weekly and Debutiful, and was shortlisted for the 2024 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous publications, including One Story, Sewanee Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Electric Literature, and has received a PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her husband and three sons.
This workshop is open to fiction writers 21 years of age and older. Applications will open on Monday, February 2, 2026. The deadline to apply for the workshop is Tuesday, March 3 at 11:59pm ET. Please send in your application, which should consist of a personal statement and a manuscript (either a short story or novel excerpt of 5,000 words or less) of what you would like to workshop, via Submittable. Note that what you submit will be what you will be workshopping in class.
We are seeking writers who are looking to hone their craft and are excited to learn from each other and the instructor in an intimate and supportive environment. Workshop participants will be selected based on the strength of their writing sample and personal statement.

There is a non-refundable $10 application fee.
Please note that to be eligible for the Patron rate, applicants must be an active Patron of One Story as of August April 14.
