In this six-week online workshop, author Rachel Lyon (Self-Portrait with Boy, Fruit of the Dead) will guide students through the sometimes mechanical, often mysterious process of writing fiction. Short lectures and class discussions will focus on specific aspects of craft, including story structure, dialogue, beginnings and endings, scene and exposition, character and setting. Brief in-class exercises will make practice of creative alchemy, transforming theory into practice, living into narrative art. Each student should plan to workshop one complete story or novel excerpt, and offer constructive feedback weekly on others’ work.

This class is limited to 10 students and is designed for writers with workshop experience. Tuition includes a 30-minute meeting with the instructor.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Rachel Lyon is the author of Self-Portrait with Boy, a finalist for the Center for Fiction’s 2018 First Novel Prize, and Fruit of the Dead, an NEPM (New England Public Media) Book Club pick which The New York Times called “superb” and “refreshing.” Rachel’s short work has appeared in One Story,The Rumpus,Electric Literature, and elsewhere. A cofounder of Ditmas Lit (Brooklyn, NY) and The Dream Away Reading Series (Becket, MA), and a creative writing instructor for various institutions, most recently Bennington College, Rachel has been appointed the 2024 Paris Writer in Residence by the Paris School of Arts and Culture, the American University of Paris, and the Centre Culturel Irlandais. She lives with her husband and two young children in Western Massachusetts.

This workshop is open to fiction writers 21 years of age and older. The deadline to apply for the workshop is Wednesday, September 25 at 11:59pm ET. Please send in your application, which should consist of a personal statement and a manuscript (either a short story or novel excerpt of 5000 words or less) of what you would like to workshop, via Submittable.

We are seeking writers who are looking to hone their craft and are excited to learn from each other and the instructor in an intimate and supportive environment. Workshop participants will be selected based on the strength of their writing sample and personal statement.

Complete application guidelines are available on the application. Please note that you will need to create a Submittable account to apply.

There is a non-refundable $10 application fee.
